NT on the Internet

My Recomendations for 'net server software:

  • DNS: Berkeley Internet Name Domain Software (BIND v.4.9.7) is a FULL port of BIND to NT by Larry Kahn.

  • SMTP MAIL: University of Edinburgh (EMWAC) Internet Mail Services (IMS) for NT.

The EMWAC IMS is a little out of date, but the only freeware SMTP server I could find.

  • WEB:
    • Microsoft's IIS 4.0 is de-rigeur if you're using NT-S 4.0; otherwise,
    • The APACHE Freeware web server for Win32.

  • SCRIPTING: Of course you'll need PERL 5, to do cool CGI gateway stuff! PLUS now there is PERLSCRIPT!

  • PATCHES: The latest Service Pack for NT 4.0.

  • STREAMING MEDIA:

    • Real Networks Basic Server.

This is a free license to run up to 25 simultaneous media streams. Audio, video, or mixed. You must fill out a registration form to download.

    • Real Networks Real Producer.

This is the encoding tool to make Real Media format audio/video. You must fill out a registration form to download.

    • Real Networks Real Player. You must fill out a registration form to download.

    • Microsoft's Netshow Media Server. This includes the content creation tools now. You must fill out a registration form to download.

    • Microsoft's Media Player.

Microsoft's Own List of All the BEST NT Toys

Superlative list of tools that appears to be very well maintained.

Windows NT Resource Kit Utilities

The 4.0 Resource Kit is now available, but as with 3.51, the utilities are no longer free. ( Well with a couple of exceptions, like PERL 5 and REXX ). PERL is actually being developed elsewhere and you can get the latest version of PERL from Active State.

The NT RESKIT includes the EMWAC (The University of Edinburgh) tools, but many of the tools have been updated since their inclusion in the RESKIT.

The Microsoft DNS Service has been updated since the 3.5 resource kit. It is a released part of NT 4.0 but I still prefer Larry Kahn's port of the BIND 4.9.7 code to NT.

Microsoft still has the free stuff from the Resource kits available as well as the Service Packs. NB. Their server is VERY busy!

The obligatory Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Eudora is the original SMTP/POP mail client. Now distributed as a pay-for "Pro" edition and a freeware "Light" edition.
